Audiometric Technician Certification and Recertifcation Courses
A Certified Audiometric Technician is essential to the success of occupational health hearing loss prevention programs (HLPPs). Audiometric technicians are responsible for conducting hearing screenings, reviewing results, counseling workers on hearing conservation and hearing protection, and reporting findings to the employer’s hearing loss prevention program.
In Alberta, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations require that audiometric technicians complete a training course in audiometric testing and pass both a written and practical exam. To maintain certification, technicians must requalify every five years.
THM Industrial Audiology Group has been offering audiometric technician certification courses for over 35 years. We provide training for all Canadian jurisdictions, excluding British Columbia, which has its own certification process. The full course spans three days, while the re-certification course is one day.
Our courses are taught by experienced audiologists who bring years of clinical, teaching, and hearing conservation expertise. The in-person training is designed to meet the audiometric testing requirements for hearing loss prevention programs (HLPPs). A written and practical examination will be administered at the end of each course.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the training, audiometric technicians will have a comprehensive understanding of the following:
- Responsibilities and limitations of the audiometric technician with respect to the following Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standards:
- CSA Standard Z107.6:16 (R2020): Audiometric Testing for Use in Hearing Loss Prevention Programs
- CSA Standard Z1007:22: Hearing Loss Prevention Program (HLPP) Management
- CSA Standard Z94.2-14 (R2019): Hearing Protection Devices – Performance, Selection, Care, and Use
- CSA Standard Z107.56-18 (R2022): Measurement of Noise Exposure
- Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code, Part 16: Noise
- Physics of Sound: Characteristics of sound, sound measurement, the decibel scale
- Anatomy & Physiology of the Ear: Types of hearing loss, progression, causes, and prevention
- Noise as a Health Risk: Damage risk criteria, effects of noise on hearing, and noise-induced hearing loss
- Noise Management: Noise assessments, noise reduction, and control
- Hearing Protection: Types, selection methods, and rating as outlined in CSA Z94.2-14; why and how to apply them
- Audiometers: Types, usage, maintenance, storage, and handling
- Audiogram Review and Interpretation
- Audiometric Testing: The role of audiometric testing in HLPPs, equipment checks, test environment, case history, infection control, test procedures, threshold recording, restricted activities under the Health Professions Act, and referral criteria to healthcare professionals
- Audiogram Classification Systems
- Education and Counseling: Guidance for workers on hearing conservation
- Data Management, Record Keeping, and Program Evaluation: Compliance with privacy legislation and regulations
Please Note: For students from other Canadian jurisdictions, the instructor will review region-specific guidelines and provide additional information related to their individual province.
Practical Skills and Competencies
Upon completing the training course, technicians will be able to demonstrate the following practical competencies:
- Selection and Fitting of Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs): As outlined in CSA Z1007:22 and CSA Z94.2
- Training on Correct Use of HPDs: Including proper fitting, care, and usage
- Care and Troubleshooting of Audiometric Equipment
- Performance Check and Calibration: Ensure audiometric instrumentation and the test environment are functioning properly
- Hearing Screening Procedures: Proper earphone placement, test instruction, and accurate recording of results
- Test Result Classification: Providing appropriate feedback to individuals and hearing loss prevention programs
- Measurement and Monitoring of Ambient Noise Levels
- Infection Control Practices: Maintaining proper hygiene for clients and associated equipment.
Course materials included!
Each student will receive a course manual to guide them through the training and take home for future reference.
Meet Our Instructors
Our audiometric technician certification courses are taught by experienced audiologists with years of clinical, teaching, and hearing conservation expertise. Below are our lead instructors:
Dr. Raeanne G. Rowswell, R.Aud, AUD(C)
Registered Audiologist
